Training camp doesn’t start for many weeks and the season doesn’t kick off for months. It’s a long offseason for football fans. I know it. You know it. And the Indianapolis Colts know it. And that’s why they’re doing everything they can to help get you through. Including bringing the Colts to you!
Thursday was a perfect evening in Indiana. And it was a perfect night to bring some Colts cheer to Columbus, where hundreds of fans gathered to celebrate their team.
Also in attendance were Colts mascot, Blue, Colts cheerleaders, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, and cornerback Darius Butler. The crowd lined up around the block to get autographs and meet a real Colts player in person.
I asked Barbara Newman from Columbus what it meant to see those guys show up in her backyard. “Everything,” she said. “My six year old, T.Y. is his favorite. So, to bring him out here, to see the look on his face is everything.”
And the fans aren’t the only ones who appreciate it. “They’re coming out here today. Just coming out here to get autographs and spend some time with us, that means a lot to us,” said Hilton. It also brings back memories, as he remembers waiting in line to get Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson’s autograph when he was a young fan.
For Darius Butler, it was Warren Moon at a Super Bowl in Miami. “Time definitely flies and you appreciate it that much more, being able to see it from both sides,” he said. “I don’t see much of the rest of the state that much, so to get out and see the community that supports us, not only in Indy, but statewide is important.”
While most people only see them on game day, the Colts cheerleaders spend most of their time out in the community meeting the fans. For six-year veteran, Stefanie B., it’s her favorite part of the job.
“This might be the only Colts interaction that some of these huge fans have. So, having that opportunity, it does make it more special. And we know that each person in line is so genuinely excited, it makes us excited to meet them. It’s just a really cool atmosphere.”
If you missed them in Columbus, you can still catch the Colts in other spots over the next few weeks, including at Lucas Oil Stadium on June 10th.
