What’s better than pizza on Super Bowl Sunday? How about free pizza on Super Bowl Sunday?
Well, guess what? There’s an app for that.
It all started with Mike Lynch and his friends making up games while attending baseball games in Chicago.
“If you were there with three of your buddies, you might play a game where you’re maybe putting a dollar in a cup and whatever guy on the field gets a hit, everyone gets a dollar.”
Then, technology took over and literally changed the game.
“We noticed how people watched sporting events be it at a stadium, at home, or at a bar, and just noticed that people were constantly on their phones, either checking scores, or texting friends, or on Facebook, Twitter, you name it.”
They saw an opportunity and Box Score Games was born.
“What we decided to do was make these really simple games that really anyone can play with your friends. It really doesn’t even matter how much knowledge you have about the sport or the actual players that are playing.”
“What happens is, you’ll check into the first half of the game and you’ll get a game board that looks like an empty pizza pie and it has eight empty slices. So, in those slices, you’re going to have eight events that need to happen throughout the first half in order for you to win. And no game board is alike.”
Unlike fantasy football, all you have to do to play Fantasy Pizza is create a user name, then sit back and enjoy the game.
“So, in one of those slices, you may have the Denver Broncos scoring a touchdown. When that happens in real time during the game on Sunday, you’re going to get a slice of pizza, a pepperoni slice, that automatically fills in for you,” Lynch says. “So, you don’t have to do anything, which is like the biggest selling point to why people play this game. It automatically fills in and you watch as the events fill in.”
In the second half, you get a brand new game board and another chance to win. Lynch says it’s all about enhancing the game day experience, not distracting from it.
“It’s funny. You don’t have to do anything, but it’s so engaging because it’s so exciting when you see a slice of pizza filling into your board. It’s just one of those things like, ‘Oh my God, I need seven more slices’ or ‘I need one more slice.’ If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party, this is a great way to say, ‘Hey guys, we should all play this game during the Super Bowl and we might win free pizza and we might have the opportunity to win free pizza for a year.’”
That’s right. Free pizza. From Papa John’s. For a year! Can I get an Omaha?
“If your pizza pie fills in completely, you will win a prize right away that shows up in your prize hub. We will have free pizza that we’re giving away during the game and then also, we’re having a special promotion called the Golden Slice Sweepstakes after the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl. If you get a golden slice that shows up on your game board, you’ll be entered in to win pizza for a year.”
Come Monday, one team will be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. And one fan will be hoisting a pizza box.
Who’s it going to be?
You can play Fantasy Pizza throughout the NFL season. And there’s a Fantasy Pizza game tied to March Madness coming soon.
