Morgan was born and raised in Indianapolis. She went to Perry Meridian High School and she’s now a freshman at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.
This is her second year auditioning for the Colts Cheerleaders.
“I came here last year not really knowing what I wanted to do. I just figured I’m graduating high school, what’s the next step? And I figured this was kind of what the next step is.”
But she was missing one important thing.
“So, I kind of came not really with a lot of passion. And last year I went through and I made it to finals and I absolutely fell in love with the program, I fell in love with the people most importantly. Everyone is super supportive, they just want everyone to succeed. And they’ll help you with whatever.”
When it was over, she had no doubt she’d be back to do it again. And this year, she brought something else she didn’t have last year.
“I am 100% more confident,” she says. “I’m a little more mature, and the fact that I know what I want and I know the way to get it and that’s coming to these prep classes, renting out the rooms in our recreation center at school, and staying in front of that mirror for an hour and just doing it over and over and over again.”
Behind the scenes, she’s got a team of people cheering her on.
“My parents are the biggest supporters. As soon as they see I’m out of here they’re like – phone call. ‘How was it? What happened?’” she says.
“My grandmother is probably my biggest supporter. She just had heart surgery. They had to put a defibrillator in and two weeks after, she sat me down. She said, ‘Listen, Morgan.’ She’s getting up and she’s like, ‘This is how you need to walk on – jazz walk it on.’ She’s like, ‘We need to do extensions. We need longer hair. You need to whip that hair.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, my gosh!’”
“I have a younger sister, she’s 16 and she dances as well. She’s more into the cheerleading aspect of things and the first prep class, after they posted the video, she pointed me out and I got a page text, ‘This wasn’t big enough, this wasn’t big enough, you need to make this different.’”
It’s all in good fun, she says. It’s something they bond over.
“They’re all super involved and they all have their ideas of what they think I need to do,” she laughs. “The Colts Cheerleaders have their team telling them what to do, I have mine.”
But this year, Morgan has something no one else can give her.
“Sean (Bartram) always says, ‘You have to know your why in order to be successful.’ And this year, I have my why.”
